Obituary of Sally Daniel
Sally Patricia Hewitt Daniel
1946-2012
October 13, 1946 - February 7, 2012
Sally was born in Mansfield, La. to Lt. Col. Charles Edward Hewitt and his wife Frances Ellen Rogers. Although she was reared in Louisiana, the Hewitt family lived all over the world on US Army installations. She stayed close to home to attend Louisiana Tech in Ruston, and graduated with a degree in Elementary Education. At Tech, she met and fell in love with a wonderful man named Bill Daniel, from Zachary, La., and they wed in August of 1968. While Bill attended medical school at LSU, they lived in New Orleans, where Sally taught primary school. They spent several summers in Colorado working at the Grand Lake Lodge. After Bill finished his degree, the Daniels decided to make their home in Denver. Sally continued to teach school and immersed herself in Denver life. She was a member of the Junior League, the Denver Women's Press Club, the Royal Gorge Society, the Central City Opera Guild, the Friends of Fine Art Foundation, the Bal de Ballet, University Hills Baptist Church, and Trinity Church of the Pines. In 1979 their daughter Katharine Ellen was born, and in 1982 they welcomed son William Edward, Jr.. Sally loved her family, and was involved in the PTO and many other school-related groups, always striving for the best for her children.
Sally supported the arts, and enjoyed entertaining, playing bridge and dominoes, getting together with friends, and writing. In 1991 she co-authored "Marketing without Mystery: A Practical Guide to Writing a Marketing Plan," and in 1993 she co-authored "A Colorado Kind of Christmas," both with good friend, Laura Dirks. Sally was the Marketing Chairman for the Junior League of Denver's Crème de Colorado Cookbook. She passionately gave back to her community, and served on the board of The Gathering Place, and was instrumental in starting the Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers Foundation (now known as Rocky Mountain Cancer Assistance). Over the years, she volunteered at many organizations close to her heart. Her favorite place in the world was to be in the family cabin in Grand Lake, Colorado, enjoying the mountains and making sure her gardens were beautiful.
Above everything she loved and cherished spending time with her husband, children, and family; they were her first priority in life. She is survived by her husband, William E. Daniel; daughter, Katy Daniel; son, Will Daniel and daughter-in-law, Shanna, of Washington, DC; sister Fran Hewitt of Shreveport, LA; and a beloved extended family.
In addition to flowers, Sally wished for donations to be made to Trinity Church of the Pines (PO Box 676, Grand Lake, CO 80447). A service will be held for the internment at Grand Lake Cemetery Saturday, June 9th, 2012 at 1:00pm.
