James Francis Sloan

December 25, 1945 — September 7, 2024

Kremmling, Colorado

The passing of James Francis Sloan (Jim) brought an outpouring of cards to his family honoring a “quiet, calming presence,” a “kind soul,” a “caring and dedicated man,” a “treasure to the Kremmling community” who was “one of the good guys.”

Jim passed away on September 7 th and those closest to him immediately felt the absence of a man of integrity whose peaceful demeanor was felt as he engaged with his family and his community.

Born on Christmas Day of 1945, Jim was the oldest of five children in Peoria, Illinois. He joined the United States Navy in 1964, served in the Vietnam War, and was honorably discharged in 1973. The early 1970’s saw Jim establish a new home in Kremmling, CO. He and his wife, Jeanne, raised three children and became dedicated members of the small mountain community where he retired from Henderson Mine and Mill in 2006.

Jim served his town through various causes including the Kremmling Town Council, the West Grand School District Board of Education, the Kremmling Rotary Club, the Kremmling Fire District Board, and the Grand County Library District Board. At the time of his passing, he held the position of President of the Library District Foundation. His dedication to his country extended beyond his service in Vietnam as he became an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). Jim proudly carried the US flag for parades and supported others during gatherings involving veterans.

Jim loved the simplicity of the outdoors and wide open spaces. He embraced kayaking across Colorado lakes, and ventured often into the mountains while backpacking, hiking, or Nordic skiing. He is fondly remembered for hunting and fishing trips with his son. Jim and Jeanne spent time together with their children, grandchildren, and friends. He and Jeanne enjoyed travels together across the US and into Europe, China, and Tibet, while Jim also took time to visit Africa.

Jim is survived by Jeanne, his children Sarah, Tony and wife Stephanie, Jennifer and husband DJ, and grandchildren Madison (13) and Ben (11); brother Doug Sloan, sisters Amy Stephens and husband Don Stephens, Molly Cranford and husband Tim Cranford, Julie Sloan, and many nieces and nephews.

His memorial service will be Friday, September 27, 2024, 2 pm in the afternoon at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Silverthorne, CO.

In lieu of flowers please send donations to VFW, heroes.vfw.org or Grand County Library Foundation, PO Box 1050, Granby, CO 80446.
