Long-time Fraser resident Helen Margarett Smith passed away peacefully in her home on Friday, August 4th, 2023, surrounded by her family. She was 93 years old.
Helen was born to Thomas M. and Pauline M. Scarbrough in Willow Springs, Missouri where she lived until the age of eleven. The family moved to Omaha, Nebraska where they spent 2 years, until her father discovered the Fraser Valley and moved the family there when Helen was just fourteen years old. She remembered her father being all excited to show them their new home, and that Helen’s glimpse of it was NOT as enthusiastic! However, over time, Fraser would soon become a place she would never want to leave! Helen met and married her husband Harold in the Fraser area, and after having to relocate to El Paso, Texas for his service in the Air Force for a short time, the couple returned to the Fraser Valley, where she stated that she would never again live under air-conditioning, and she never did. Fraser became the home she loved, a place she and Harold would raise their family.
Helen had a love of being outdoors in the summer. You would always find her out in her yard planting flowers; she loved being able to have her hands in the dirt, making multiple flower beds throughout her yard. Neighbors would often stop by and comment to her on how beautiful her yard and flower gardens were. She had a way of making all she touched bloom in beauty, including the town of Fraser itself. Helen was one of the original “flower chicks”, along with her sister Mary Ann and their friend Betty Roberts, who together would plant flowers all over town in the summer and care for them like her own!
Helen had a deep love for her family; her children, grandchildren, great grand children, and her great-great grandchildren, too! Actually, she had a love for all babies in general!
Helen is survived by her son Steve (Cathy), her daughter Donna (Richard) Bennett, her siblings Mary Ann Roberts, James Scarbrough, and Donna Jean Kilburn. Her grandsons Tory Smith, and Rick and Timothy Bennett, her great grandchildren Dylan, Austin, and Brooke Smith, Joel and Reina Bennett, and Jaiden Ruiz. Also her great-great grandchildren Owen Ray and Sofiya Jade Ruiz, and Ivy Rae Griffin.
Helen is preceded in death by her parents, Thomas M. and Pauline M. Scarbrough, her husband Harold “Smitty” Smith, and siblings Robert and Thomas Scarbrough, Jr, and Donald Eugene.
Helen will be greatly missed by her family and the many friends she made along the way! She touched people’s lives in the most positive way. She welcomed others into her family with an open heart, she knew no enemies and always found forgiveness. She loved all.
A sincere thank you to all of her neighbors and friends who watched out for her and gave her assistance whenever it was needed!
